As we head into the summer months everyone is thinking of all the fun activities that they will engage in with friends and family which after all that is what life is all about but now, we have another reason to celebrate, and that reason is Juneteenth it is a day that has long been overdue to celebrate I sometimes sit and think about what my ancestors felt like when the day came that they were no longer considered property and though they were no longer chained to the plantation they still felt like it was their home because they had nowhere else to go now imagine how conflicted they must have felt knowing that they were free but mentally they were still chained to a plantation after all most of them could not read and write the English language that well so what were they supposed to do but at the time none of this mattered to them they had achieved the ultimate goal of being free which was all they ever wanted before they entered the shores of which to them was a foreign land so the celebrations were jovial it was something that their ancestors dreamed about and now they are living the dream and now we are living a another kind of dream and that is the day that the federal government has finally acknowledged the proclamation of this day something that can ease the pain of what enslavement has done people of color this day is not a day of selfishness and can be shared with people of all races so that we can rejoice in harmony and try to heal properly from what slavery cost us this country has finally reconciled that fact that there was a cost for slavery just think of where we would be as a human race had we all worked for each other instead of other groups of people working for one group of people these are the obstacles that prevent us from being great but I will save that for another blog so as we celebrate Juneteenth let us think of our ancestors and make them feel as though their struggle was important because their sacrifice gave us the life that we have today.
